Tents can be a big investment and so proper care will ensure that they work well when you need them.

A great tent will protect you from the elements, provide you with comfort and privacy, and make the camping experience enjoyable.

The key to having a tent that will give years of service begins in the field. Establish a routine for setting up and taking down your tent.

Take time, when setting up your tent, to clear the area removing rocks or twigs that could puncture the floor of the tent. Place a tarp down that will to keep moisture from forming under the floor of the tent and then stake the corners and get set up.

Here are a few techniques you might consider to keep the inside of my tent clean while camping:

• When space allows, take a door mat and place it outside the tent to avoid bring dirt into the tent.
• Bring a pair of house slippers to wear in the tent and place your boots in a large garbage bag just inside the tent door.
• At the end of your camping trip, clear out your gear and use a small broom to remove dirt and debris from the floor of the tent.
• Leave windows and doors unzipped to allow airflow so it is completely dry as you roll it up.
• When breaking camp, take the tent down last. This will allow the sun’s morning rays to help dry it out.
• Roll, don’t fold your tent before returning it to the storage bag.
• Mold and mildew are the enemies of your tent. It should be completely dry before you store in a cool, dry place.
• It is well worth your time to set up and clean your tent when you return home to make sure it is clean and dry.
